Cafe Aux Deux Magots

“One of Hemingway’s Favorites”

September 23, 2019                                                                                                                                 Marlton Hotel, NYC

Way back in about 1991 I wrote a piece about cafes as pertaining to New York and cafes in America, of European and Parisian Cafes, and how the United States was pretty much devoid of these things that were an absolute necessity of Parisian, French, Italia, and European life. I had written of how important cafes were particularly Paris, to the French and Italians, all over Italy, France, Spain, in Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and all over Europe, cafes were at the very center of European social life, and as a matter of fact, an absolute necessity to European life itself, but not of America at the time. Most Americans were totally unaware of this thing called “cafe life,” or the pleasures and necessities that the cafe offered. First and foremost, there is coffee and refuge, to sit, relax, socialize or not. The coffee (Espresso – Cappuccino) was relatively cheap (much more expensive these days).

The Parisian cafe has long been a place to meet (friends, lovers), rendezvous, socialize, read, write, eat, or just contemplate. For many their neighborhood cafe was their living room, eluding to the fact that many lived in tiny apartments or had just one room, the cafe became their living room, and or dining room. Artists and writers have long been inhabitants of cafes, especially writers who for the price of a Cafe Latte could linger for hours writing the great novel and what-not.

Maybe not all, but most Europeans, the cafe is absolutely necessary to living life. Americans, had not been accustomed to the same way of life, and I wrote that original piece in 1990, way before Starbucks, coffee bars, and other cafes ever became a thing. Now, I for one am not a fan of Starbucks, as I’ve been going to any number of wonderful independent cafes for years, and I have never been one to do restaurants or cafes that are part of any worldwide or national chain, “not for me.”

                                                                                                                   CAFFE REGGIO 11.15  PM

Well I’m having my 3rd cafe visit of the day. I’m at Caffe Reggio in Greenwich Village, the place I wrote that little piece on cafes so many years ago. On that day in 1991, it was a cold Winters day in New York. There was a major snow storm (18 inches) going on, and I was sitting at a window table, sipping my cappuccino and watching the heavy snow fall. It was just beautiful, and was inspiring me to write as I thought of Hemingway, writing at that cafe in Paris so many years ago. Hemingway wrote about it in a Moveable Feast and the image was set in my mind on this day, and so I wrote about cafes. If I remember correctly, it was on a cafe on the Boulevard St Michele in Paris. Hemingway did not give the name of the cafe, but he painted quite a memorable picture. From reading books about Hemingway, I knew that as far as Parisian Cafes were concerned, his favorites were; Cafe Select on the Boulevard Monparnasse, Cafe au Duex Magots, an unknown cafe on the Rue Mouffetard, and the Closerie d Lilas, also on Blvd. Monparnasse, but further down from where Select is.

So, needless to say, I’m quite a fan of Hemingway, the man, and his works. At the time, I was totally enamored of 1920 Paris, the writers and artists, and I’d read whatever I could get my hands on, on the era and subjects. I loved Paris, I still do, but you have a different way of looking at things in your 20s, everything so much more magical when you’re young and discovery things for the first time. And so I was, and my first trip to Paris in January of 1986 absolutely blew away. I was smitten, and I just ate the city up, both figuratively and literally, I ate up Paris. My favorite things to do was going to different cafes for breakfast or anytime during the day. I imagined myself a writer, I imagine myself Hemingway. “Hey, one can dream can’t they?” No I’d never become another Hemingway. I know this now. When you’re young you’re full of dreams, and as they say of young men, “Full of Piss & Vinegar.” Yes I could dream, and especially being the young man with so many dreams, and besides, I was on vacation, and I was going to live it, and enjoy it to the max. And so I did.

I found a wonderful hotel in my Frommer’s Guide, the Cluny Hotel on Boulevard Saint Michele in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank of the Seine. It was a wonderful little hotel in a great location. close to all the great cafes and quite a lot of marvelous bistros, both of which were my two main interest and means of entertainment, and I live in both. I’d get up and go to some cafe on St Michele or St Germain, for Cafe Latte and a Croissant. “What else?” I was in Paris. At this point in time, I didn’t know of the famous cafes of Duex Magots, Flore, or Select, I’d learn of them latter. So in January of 86, any cafe that looked good to me, I’d go into. I did have Patricia Wells wonderful culinary guidebook The Food Lovers Guide to Paris which had me in so many wonderful bistros, even before I went, her writings ( and pictures) made me feel as though I was already there. I read that book feverishly, taking notes and planning my trip, and the bistros I wanted to go to. Yes this book is quite wonderful, and I highly recommend anyone going to Paris, don’t leave home without it, it’s indispensable

I just can’t tell you enough about how much I loved this trip, I savored it with all my being, as I’d done in Rome just 6 months before, I was like a kid on Christmas day, full of euphoria for what I was experiencing. Boy could I eat all up back then. Besides going to cafes, I’d have a wonderful lunch at one of the bistros I’d picked out, and have dinner at another, eating Foe Gras, Escargot, Bouf Bourgiononne and the lot of French Bistro Classics. I ate at Bistro Polidor on the Rue Monsiuer la Prince, La Coupole, and Brasserie Julien on St Denis. I ate Choucroute Garne at the Brasserie on Il Sr Louis, just over the bridge from Notre Dame and the Il d Cite. I ate at a wonderful little bistro for lunch one day by the great big Flea Market at Cligancourt.

I couldn’t wait to get to the tiny little bar / bistro that Patrica Wells said was the most beautiful bar in Paris. It was the Le Cochon L Orielle at 15 Rue Monmartre. When I got there, I was not disappointed. The place was just as gorgeous as Patricia had decribed, and I had to agree, this has to be the most beautiful little bar in all of Gay Paree, “I just Loved it.”

Me at Le COCHEON L ARIELLE

PARIS

1999

Le Cochon L’ Orielle no longer exist in its original state as it was when I first went ther in 1986, in 1991, and as was when I was there in 1999 (pictured above). You see me in the picture above taken of me and the couple who owned the place at the time. Rhe couple is behind the gorgeous old bar (original) and I’m on the other side. If you look at the picture below, you will see that the beautiful old bar no longer exist and there are tables in its place, with a new smaller bar at the end. Unfortunately this is not the original configuration as it was for many years and the 3 separate occasions when I ate there, once by myself (1986), once with my girlfriend Merceditas in 1991, and here with my buddy Raoul (took the picture) in March 1999.

I do not know when the place was renovated. I always hate to see things like this happen, but having been in the restaurant business for many years, I’m aware of the fact that these businesses have many expenses and that these changes most likely came about as a means of survival, and it’s better that the place is still there, rather than totally going out of business.

The other change is that the 3 cute little wooden booths where I had previously eaten my delightful lunches, are now gone. As you see the counter on the left hand side of the bar with the bar-stools, this is where the booths once were. Also, you can see the spiral staircase leading to a second floor, there is now a dining room that had never existed before. The place has many more tables now, which probably as tripled its seating capacity, thus increasing revenue, and keeping the place alive. However, I really miss the old place.

Giants Quarterback Daniel Jones leads Team to First Win 2019 Season NFL

Daniel Jones

Tampa Bay Bucaneers Matt Gay misses chance to beat the New York Giants as rookie quarterback Daniel Jones shines, leading the Giants to their first win of the 2019 NFL Season. Jones looked sharp running for 2 touchdowns and passing for two more.

Late in the game, the Giants had a 4th down and 5 to go, when Daniel Jones ran for his second touchdown to tie the game at 31 points. The Giants made the extra point kick to take the lead 32 to 31 .. The Bucaneers got the ball back with 1: 16 left in the game, moved the ball down the field, setting up Matt Gay with a 32 yard field-goal attempt with just seconds left in the game.  Gay missed the field-goal attempt, and Daniel Jones and the New York Giants win their first game of the season. Yeah Daniel, yeah Giants.

Star runningback Saquon Barkley was injured early in the 2nd half and left the game with a ankle injury. Naturally all Giant Fans are wishing Saquon a quick and speedy recovery and hoping that his injury is a minor one. We want Saquon back.

The High Price of Rock Music Concert Tickets is Fucking Outrageous “What The Fuck” ?

The HIGH FUCKING PRICE of CONCERT TICKETS

WHAT THE FUCK ?

Average Price of Tickets for Elton John Concert $275

“FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS”

It’s Not Just ELTON But The Whole Industry. “WHAT The FUCK?” This is WRONG ! Plain and Simple. Don’t these People (Rock Stars) have a Heart? Sorry, I Love them. I Love my music. I Love R&B and ROCK & ROLL, but it’s just been outrageous, the prices these peopel have been charging for the past 15 Years or so? Again, “WHAT THE FUCK GUYS?” Don’t you have a Heart?

Elton John just announced that he will be extending his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Farewell Tour to four separate venues in the New York / NJ Metropolitan Area in 2020. Elton John will be leading off his New York Area Tour Dates in Manhattan at Madison Square Garden on April 6th and April 7th 2020 .. He will follow these MSG Concerts with two nights at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on April 10 & 11, then move on to Newark’s Prudential Center for one night on April 15th before heading over to Long Island to perform two nights at Nassau Coliseum on April 17 & 18th. Thank You Elton. “You know we all Love you here in New York and are quite excited and happy that you will be playing all these dates, giving New Yorker’s, Jerseyite’s and anyone else a chance to see you one more time. “I know I’m dam excited, a chance to see another legend, after seeing numerous ones over the years, like: George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Dianna Ross, Crosby Still Nash & Young, BB King, and a few others, now I get to go see you Elton, live and in concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden. I can’t wait.
I just heard the news today, and I’m already phsyched, cue-ing up your music, listening to such songs as Tiny Dancer, Levon, All The Girls Love Allice, Harmony, Funeral For a Friend and more. All the great hits and more. I’ve been listening to your music ever since Madman Across The Water came out, I Loved it, and it was one of the first Rock Albums I bought way back in 1971. I bought the album at the music store Tomko Brothers in Rutherford, New Jersey. Boy these kids these days, don’t know what they’re missing, not being in the culture of buying albums, as we , did back int the 1970. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, or Elton John would come out with a new album, you’d save up your money to get it ($4.99), go down to the record store and get your copy. You’d bring it home, tear off the plastic wrap, check it out, put it on your record player (stereo), and read the liner-notes as you listened along in teenage bliss. “Ah, the Good Ol Days.” Yes these kids today don’t know what they’re missing. And we could afford to got to concerts back then. Well this is a great complaint of mine, and millions of others. The price of concert tickets these days are obscene. What The Fuck?” They are outrageous! People can’t afford to go to concerts . You have to be Rich. This isn’t fare. I wish some of you guys would do something about this, it just isn’t fare. Elton, you’ve got millions. Wouldn’t you consider or think of working people who want to see you but can’t afford the ridiculously F-ing High Prices of Concert Tickets. I’m going to pay the price, it’s a lot for me, but I will pay, I want to go to see you for once, but the prices are just not fare at all. When I was a teenager, and I worked hard and paid for tickets myself to got o concerts, the average price was about $12. The average weekly wages for the average American was about $300 a week in 1974. The average weekly wage is just $700 in 2019, meaning the average weekly wage has gone up just a little more than two times. Not much! Yet the insane prices of Concert Tickets have Skyrocketed to average of $175 per ticket, or about 14 TIMES What they used to be. Wages increased by 2 Times, concert tickets increase 14 Times in the same amount of time. there’s something wrong here? Is it GREED? Again, “WHAT THE FUCK?” Plain and simple, this is wrong. Can you here me ROCK STARS ?

ROLLING STONES Tickets Average Price $249
Yes, The Stones No Filter Tour. My friend Mireya and I were talking about the Rolling Stones one day, about how we both loved them. Yes talking about, Mick and Keith and the music and how great it was, when my friend Mireya said, “if they come around and play a Concert, I want to go with you.” As fate would have it, it was just a couple of weeks later that The Rolling Stones announced that they would be playing some concert dates in 2019. This was in December of 2018 when they announced the concert dates, and they would be playing Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey on June 13, 2019. I saw Mireya the next day, and told her. She immediately got on her phone and on to her ticket app and bought us tow tickets. “Yee-ha, awesome, we’re going to go see The Rolling Stones,” live and in concert, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts, “her we come!” Can’t wait. Mireya said, don’t worry, I’ve got it (she was Buying the tickets – on her). But I couldn’t let her pay for the tickets, I had to get her back. So we went to the concert and had an awesome time. Hey The Rolling Fucking Stones! But yeah, the tickets were not cheap. I got to get her back, and so yes, I told Mireya, we’ll find another concert and I’ll pay for those tickets. And so now, Thursday September 18th, 2019, I just heard today that Elton John has added concert tour dates to his Goodbye Yellwo Brick Road Farewell Tour and will be playing 7 concerts in the NY Metro area and will be at MSG on April 6 & 7, 2020, and so I will be buying tickets  to pay Mireya back for taking me to The Rolling Stones Concert where we had a most wonderful time. My cousins the Macri’s all went, and cousin Joe rented a party bus for us to go to Metlife Stadium, and we had a tailgate party in the parking lot and we all had a great time.
So now, I will be getting two tickets to see Elton John at Madison Square Garden. 500 Bucks! “What The Fuck?” Well I’ll pay the price. I have two. It’s not often you get to see a Legend, and in 10 years from now, there will not be any of these great Rock N Roll Stars playing Concerts any longer. The Stones, God Bless Then have been keeping it going for ever, but it can’t be that long off when they will finally hang it up, and not do any more live shows. It just won’t be possible. This is after all, Elton’s Farewell Tour, and he won’t be playing any longer. Well, maybe? You never know? People have been known to change their minds. The great Frank Sinatra did, and thanks to him coming out of retirement I was so fortunate to see him 7 times, and at more than reasonable price (only $25 to $40). Yes, imagine that? I never paid more than $40 to see the great Frank Sinatra perform live. Even still, if the price of concert tickets stayed in line with the average working persons weekly wages, if Sinatra was alive and performing today, and the ticket prices were in-line with wages, the average price of a Sinatra Concert ticket would now be about $85 to $95, not $175 to $295 to $500 or one-thousand dollars are more like they are today, “What The Fuck?”

Bellino Makes New York s Best Burger

.
.
.
MINETTA TAVERN
Good Burgers, but Far From The Best
.
.
New York’s Best Burger? Who makes it? Or who makes, plural, New York’s Best Burgers. Well first off, Minetta Tavern does not make the Best Burger in New York. Far from it. And of the Burgers at Minetta Tavern, forget the highly overrated Black Label Burger, the Minetta Burger has it beat, though there are better Burgers in New York. For, one, the Burger I make at my house in Greenwich Village, just two blocks away from Minetta Tavern is far superior, a buch tastier burger than you’ll get at Minetta Tavern., but there’s one thing we have in common when making New York’s best burger. And the Burger I make in my house is way Better than the Burgers at Minetta Tavern.
So what’s the difference you ask? And you want to know what it is I have in common with the Burgers at Minetta Tavern? The thing I have in common with Minetta Tavern when making my Burger that is without question one of the Best in New York, and for a whole lot less money (about $3.10). Yes, thing that Minetta Tavern has in common with me, in our Burger making, is that we both buy our meat from pat LaFrieda, it’s just that I use the better blend than Minetta Tavern. The Black Label Burger Blend by Pat LaFrieda is made with Dry Aged Beef, which though people would want you to think otherwise, dry aged beef is one of the worst things you can use to make a burger. Dry Aged Beef is old meat, and is actually meat that is deteriorating. It’s much better to use fresh beef when making a burger, and that’s all their is to it, and Minetta Tavern uses Dry Aged Beef for its Black Label Burger. Not good.
I have in the past year used numerous sources to buy ground beef for my burgers. I buy meat from one of the best Butcher Shops in New York, which is Florence Prime Meat Market on Jones Street in Greenwich Village. I’ve been buying Sausages, and Steaks from this great old Italian Butcher, which to me is the best butcher shop in all of New York. I mostly bought steaks here, and it’s relatively recently that I started buying ground beef to make burgers with. I was there buying myself a Newport Steak (Specialty of The House) one day, when I watched an elderly neighborhood lady getting individual Hamburger Patties made for her. I started chatting with here about the burgers, and she said she loved them, so I said I’d get some of them, my next time at the butcher shop, and so I did a couple weeks later. I’ve tried both the chuck and the sirloin ground beef from the market. They both made fine burgers.
Trader Joe’s recently opened in my neighborhood, and I’ve tried a couple different types of their ground beef (80/20 and 85/15 ratios), and they both made pretty good burgers.
Today, I wanted to get a couple burger patties from Florence Prime Meats, but they were closed when I got there, so I made my way over to Grestide’s. I went to the meat counter and spotted Pat LaFrieda’s Burger Blend made with Beef Brisket, Chuck, and Beef Short Ribs. There were 4 Patties in the package, for $8.99, at $2.25 a Burger, it’s more than I normally spend, but if I can get a better burger it will be well worth it. I’m still trying to get a Burger to taste as good as the ones I made from the meat that my cousin Joe gave me, that was a pacckage of 4 Black Angus Burger Patties from Wayside Market in Southhold, New York, on the North Fork of Long Island. The Burgers I made with that meat, may very well be the Best Burgers I’ve ever had in my life. “I kid you not,” and I have witnesses to back me up on this. Anyway, I wanted to see if this Burger Blend from pat LaFrieda could come close, or dear I say, be better than those Burgers made with the Black Angus Patties from Wayside Market.
So I bought the burger blend and headed on home. I got my stuff ready. I sliced some New York Cheddar Cheese, and sliced some onions. I toasted and buttered an English Muffin, heat my pan, poured in a bit of oil, and threw my burgers in to cook. As the burgers were cooking, I put a little dijon Mustard on one side of the Muffin. I seasoned the burger with salt, and flipped it over to the other side. Then I seasoned the top side with salt and black pepper. The Burgers cooked another 4 minutes, and then I turned the heat off and let the burger rest for 3 minutes before putting it on top of cheese on on side of the muffin. A put a little nob of butter on top of the burger, then a little Ketchup before topping the Burger with the other half of the bun. I put it on the plate and brought it to the table. I grabbed the burger, bit into it, and from the very first bite, I htought “Wow,” it was a dam good burger, and better than any of the meat I’d bought in the past year, including Florence Prime Meat. Wow, this was impressive, and the Pat LaFrieda meat was well worth the bit more than I paid for it, and a real bargain when you consider that a McDonald’s McDouble cost about $2.69, and a superior burger like this, with more meat, cost just about .35 Cents more than the inferior McDonald’s Cheeseburger. Dam!
Yes, I loved the burger. This Burger that I just made at my house was without question better than almost any burger I’ve had in New York. my Cheeseburger was better than The Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern, or the Minetta Burger, it’s better than the Shake Shack Burger which I normally love but wasn’t that happy with their burgers the last two times I was at Shake Shack (Mine is Better). My Burger tasted better than the JG Melon Cheeseburger (I Love), but not better than the Burger I had at Charle’s Prime, which was the only Burger I’ve had in New York City that was better than the Burger I made at home.: But as good as this burger I made at home with the Pat LaFrieda Burger Blend, “it was Dam Good, but not as Good as the Burger that I made at home with the burrgers from that box of 4 Black Angus Patties from Wayside Market of Southhold, NY.

Man on The Moon 1969

MAN on The MOON

NEIL ARMSTRONG Walks on the MOON

July 20, 1969

“One Small Step for Man , One Giant Leap for Mankind”

As American Astronaut Neil Armstrong takes his first step on the Moon and does a Moon walk on July 20th in the Year of Our Lord 1969.

Yes, those historic words were spoke by Neil Armstrong “One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind,” as he his first steps on the surface of the Moon, a feat never realize by any man in the entire history of the World up to that point, and a feat only achieved by a handful of men to this very day July 20th on the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing and man walking upon the surface of our Moon.

I was just 11 years old when I watched the television as the great newsman Walter Cronkite commentated the events on CBS News as the Eagle Landed on Tranquility Base, Cronkite commentated as Neil Armstrong came out of the Lunar Lander “The Eagle” walked down the ladder and set his foot on the surface of the Moon. It was quite exciting for a boy of just 11 years to watch. I was witnessing one of mankind’s most historical event ever, live, watching this monumental event play out on TV for people to watch live as it was happening all over the world. And here I am today, a man of 61, and remembering back to that day.

We were over my mother’s good friend Josie Romeo’s house in North Arlington, New Jersey. We were there for a Summer weekend visit, and the Apollo 11 space capsule was already orbiting the Moon. The Romeo’s had just put in a nice Cabana Pool, and we were hanging out there most of the day. I remember eating Watermelon on the deck of the pool, which for me always seemed like a special treat every time we had some, and this time was no different. I loved my watermelon.

I specifically can still remember two of my favorite songs that were popular in the Summer of 69. One was actually just that. The song was “One” by Three Dog Night, “One is The Loneliest Number,” I guess speaking of being alone. The other big song was “These Eyes” by the Guess Who. Other hit songs in the Summer of 1969 were: Grazing in The Grass by The Friends of Distinction, People Got to Be Free by The Rascals, and a very weird song to me, In The Year 2525. Also popular that year, were GET BACK by The Beatles, and Honky Tonk Woman by The Rolling Stones.

The year 1969 was quite a year for New Yorker’s. The New York Jets had already won the Superbowl in January, led by brash quarterback Joe Namath.  New York’s National League baseball team The Mets would go on to Win The World Series of Baseball in 1969 and the New York Knicks basketball team would win the NBA Championship in 1970 for the 1969 / 1970 basketball season. Yes it was quite a year for New York.

One problem, as kids that didn’t have a lot of money, was when the Spalding or Wiffle Ball would break in-half, and we’d all have to chip on our nickels and dimes and any money we could get our hands on, and go to the Candy Store to buy a new ball in order to keep playing the game.

When buying the Wiffle Ball, if we had any money left we’d get and Ice Cream Bar, or candy. Candy Bars were just a Nickel back then, and an Ice Cream Sandwich or Ice Cream Bar was 10 Cents. But, we usually reserved getting the ice cream from Fritz the Good Humor Ice Cream Man who always came by the playground and we dive into the cool looking Good Humor Ice Cream Truck to get our Ice Cream of Choice. Ah, “The Good Old Days,” simpler happy times growing up in 1960s and 70s America. These were some of the things we’d do. And “Oh My God,” the music was so Wonderful back then. “Not Like The Crap” they make these days (21st Century MUSIC SUCKS).

DEAN MARTIN “The KING of COOL”
Dean Martin, “The King of Cool” ? Hell Yeah ! Dino Crocetti, better known as  Dean Martin (Stage Name) was as cool as they come. He Oozed Cool. Just look at him? That handsome Italian Son of Bitch. Dino optimized the phrase Tall Dark & Handsome. And the way he dressed, the man was a class act, full of style, grace and self-assured. And he spoke Italian. That right there makes you cool. Any American who can speak Italian, it just adds to the cool factor, and Dino had it in Spades. Dean was charming, charismatic, and just plain cool, yes he certainly was the King of Cool, an undisputed fact, though many times his coolness, and who was cooler, Dino or Frank Sinatra, it’s natural they were compared. Well, first off they both were as cool as they come. Some traits were the same, and they had their individual slyltes as well. Sinatra and Dean, they both were cool, yes. But there was only one King of Cool, and that was Dean Martin, and always will be. Just look at him, and listen to the man sing.

Drive In Movies Sadly a Thing of The Past

DriveINposter

1960s Drive-In Theater

Somewhere in America

I came across this vintage poster of a 1960s American Drive-In Theater filled great old cars from the 60s. I see a Chevy Impala Convertible, a Lincoln Continental, and a Woody Station-wagon that looks like a Ford. Oh the good old days. Going to see a movie at a Drive-In theater was loads of fun. And look at those cars? Things of Beauty. Not like the ugly machines they make today, the cars of later 50s, 1960s, and 70s were gorgeous looking machines full of character, and style, unlike what Detroit and Japan churn turn out today, they’re ugly, have no character, and pretty much all look the same. And don;t get me started on the differences in music, between the God Awful Crap they’ve been making for the past 20 years, versus all the fabulous music made in the 50s, 60s, and 1970s America and England as well.

Anyway, back to the drive-ins. Yes we saw lots of great movies at those old drive-in theaters. I remember seeing Cinderella, I guess when I was just about 4 years old. My cousin Artie took us to see Winning with Paul Newman and Robert Wagner. I saw a bunch of movies at the drive-in, including The Godfather, in the Summer of 1972. My dad took me, my brother Jimmy and our friend Terry to see that epic film at the Route 3 Drive-In in Rutherford. Later on, when I was a teenager, I’d take my friends, one sitting up front with me, and tow of my friends, in the time-honored tradition of young American men and teenage boys, a smuggled two of my friends in the large trunk of my 1967 Chevy Impala so they didn’t have to pay, and we saved money to buy Popcorn and Sodas. These are my drive-n movie memories in 1960s and 70s America. A thing that, sadly faded into the American Cultural Sunset.
