New York and The $3 PBR

New York and the $3.00 PBR, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer has been a God-Send to many New Yorkers. As you all know, the US Economy has been in the Shitter for the past 5  years or so.

Many people are out of work, and many who are working, are taking home Half-as-Much Money or more of what they used to make. People have had to buckle down and give up or curb many things they enjoyed previous to the current state of our economy, which is in almost a Depression Era State.
Yes, everybody says that we are not in a Depression, we’re in a recession. Those are the Rich and Well-Off, The 1%-ers  talking. To many, the state of our Union and their feelings are of Depression.
So, because of the Terrible State of our Economy you have given up eating out 3 times a week, you buy less clothes, spend less on Entertainment and any number of things. You haven’t had a vacation in the past two years, maybe more. You’ve given up a lot. We all have.

Now when it comes to socializing, going out for a few Beers or Cocktails with some friends, you’ve had to cut back on that too. But hey, you gotta draw a line somewhere, and everyone is entitled to a few drinks to unwind every now and then, and to be with friends. Yes times are bad, people are hurting, you need your friends more than ever. And having a few Beers or Drinks is one of the most common adult ways to do so. It’s natural and part of everyday life. You should be able to have two or three drinks or beers and not have to spend a small fortune doing so. You should be able to have 2 beers for about $10 including tip, and about $16 for tow drinks including tip. That’s reasonable. That’s what most people pay around America, and even less. But we don’t live in America, we live in the greatest City in The World, New York, and Cocktails and Beers here can be oh-so-dear. “Expensive!” Expensive as Hell, “Ridiculously Expensive.” It’s absurd and outrageous, with many places thinking it’s normal and OK to charge $16.00 or more for a measly little Cocktail made by a friggin so-called “Mixologist.” Ha!

It’s not OK, what’s a person to do? So yes, we live in New York, and having a couple cocktails here can be a costly undertaking.. What is a Poor Working Guy or Working Girl to do??? Well Boys and Girls, let’s Thank God for that great thing of wonder and the Bars and establishments who so graciously and kindly serve it, The $3.00 PBR, That’s right, a $3.oo Beer in The Land of The Over-Priced $16.00 Cocktail, Manhattan, New York, NY….. It’s quite Sad, Greedy too, not to mention “Ridiculous Ludicrous and Insane.”

Yes, Thank God and let’s thank the Kind-Hearted proprietors who serve $3.00 PBR’S or any Beer for just $3 or $4 in a New York Bar. You are doing your fellow man a public service and we thank you for that. Whoever you are, you are to be commended, and Shame-On-You, all those places that serve $14 PLUS Cocktails. “RIP-OFF” !!! Wish the masses would Boycott these places and patronize places like Blue & Gold Bar, 7B, and anyplace who has a heart. Bars that serve 3 and 4 Dollar Beers.
I just have to say, it’s great to go to a place like Blue and Gold Bar on East 7th Street and know that you can have 3 or 4 Beers for just $12 to $16, accounting for a Buck a Pop for the Barkeep. Now that’s pretty good. I have had the best times hanging at Blue & Gold with some friends. You sit at the Bar or get into a nice comfy booth, drink your Beers ($3 PBR’S), relax, listen to the Music, Chit Chat, and just enjoy, and it’s not going to cost you The Shirt Off Your Back.
Yes, you can have 4 Beers, tip included for the price of 1 Rip-Off Drink at one of those Rip-Off Joints. And if you are Dumb enough to have four drinks in one of those places, guess what it’s going to cost you? About $75 my friend.

Well, do the Math, and if you can afford $75 for only 4 drinks, God Bless You. And if you can’t, you’ve got an alternative. Right, your local $3.00 PBR Joint. They’re a God-Send.

PLACES To GET A $3.00 PBR in NEW YORK

BLUE & GOLD BAR in the East Village, on East 7th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Blue & Gold has long been a favorite of mine ever since I lived in the East Village from 1982 to 1994. It’s just a cool ol normal old style bar with a pool table, standard 50’s 60’s Bar Decor, and Best-of-All $3.oo PBR’S and $6.00 Cocktails. I love it.

7B   a.k.a. The Horseshoe Bar, also in the East Village, a bastion of cheap and fare prices in Manhattan and Land of The $3.00 PBR and other $3 and $4 Beers.  7B  is located on the corner of Avenue B at 7th Street, hence the name “7B”  … The nickname Horseshoe Bar comes from the shape and dimensions of the bar, “Horseshoe Shaped.” The bar has been the setting of numerous movie shoots, including the scene in Godfather II when Frankie Pantangeli (Frankie 5 Angels) goes to this bar for a meeting with the Rosato Brothers, and Danny Aiello raps a Piano-Wire around his neck. A scene from Crocodile Dundee and other movies as well ….  But Best of all, at 7B they serve $3.00 Beers, cheap drinks, and they have a photo and sell Potato Chips and Pretzels which practically no bars in Manhattan ever do any more. And this is a good thing when you get the munchies from the Beer. Glory Hallelujah, thank God for 7B ..

Gotta have my coffee at the Cafe. There is not much in life that pleases me more drinking a nice hot tasty Cup of Joe in the warm welcoming invirons of a nice cafe. And I don’t mean Starbucks. Yes I can have my coffee at home each day, and save quite a lot of money. Yes i could have it at home and instead of spending about $1,600 a year or $16,000 every 10 Years on the stuff, I’d just spend about $120 a year or $1200 in ten instead of that 16 Grand. Yes I could put a whopping $15,000 in my pockets every ten years or so if I wasn’t so extravagant in my daily coffee habit, but it juts wouldn’t be the same, I wouldn’t be in a cafe which I love so dearly. I’d be at home alone with my coffee and no one else around. I’d have my coffee but I wouldn’t have people nor the surroundings of a nice cafe like one of my favorites of all, the former Caffe Dante in New York’s Greenwich Village where I had my coffee ( Cappuccino, Espresso, Caffe Latte) nearly everyday for 30 years.
You see it’s not just about the coffee but about being around other people and the community and conviviality of this thing called the cafe, a place to gather and be among like-minded people, those who life the cafe life. I could just go there and burry myself in a book, do some writing, or converse with a friend, the waitress, or someone new who I just met, “you see I’m at a cafe,” and this is what you do, you read, you write, sip your coffee, you relax, that’s the essence of any good cafe, and I’ve been to many. I’ve been to Caffe Florian in Venice, Duex Maggot and Flore along with many more in Paris, to Greco in Rome, Gambrinus in Napoli, Biela in Buenas Aires, du Monde in New Orleans, Caravelle in Macau, and many more.

In New York Regular Coffee is King

.

COFFEE

Coffee and Cafes. Two things very near and dear to me. Million so others as well. In New York, we have the Best, “For getta bout it Seattle” !!! I remember 25 years ago and more when there were no Starbucks and just very few cafes in the hole city. More or less the only cafes were in Greenwich Village, Little Italy, and the East Village. There were hole neighborhoods, completely cafe-less and if you wanted to go to one you had to go to the Village or Little Italy, nothing on the hole Upper East Side.

Anyway, Coffee and Cafes are a huge thing these days and part of many a life.
Coffee and cafes, let me tell you about some of the best and my impressions. Hey, I’m a guy who has been frequenting cafes for years, each and every day, just about. I haven’t Jumped on the Band Wagon in the past 5 or ten years. I’ve been riding it for 30.

Number “One,” in New York,  a good Cup of Joe is King, “Regular” not
Grande Caramel Latte and overpriced crap like that. Not the esoteric overpriced espresso, Cortado, Machiato, Blue Bottle, and Site Specific Coffee, and blends that try to break down and make too make of a good simple thing. You know what I mean. A “Cup of Joe,” is King. Used to be Five Cents at coffee shops all over the city. Well that’s going way back. Hey don’t get me wrong, I love Espresso, Espresso Machiatto, and the great Cortado they serve at Abraco. It’s just that I gotta tell you, a “Regular” is King and let’s hope it always will be.

Abraco is utterly awesome. Maybe the Best Single tasting coffee in town, is their Cortado. Man it’s tasty. Just out of this world. But I have some problems with Abraco, as I’m not someone to pay a Premium for what I call “Hit and Run Coffee”

What is “Hit and Run Coffee” you ask? Well, let me tell you. Hit and Run Coffee is a coffee that you get at places like Caffeteria, Abraco, Third Rail Coffee, and tiny little Coffee Bars that have little or no chairs and tables and maybe just a small counter space for standing. Listen, I’m not in the habit of paying  $3.50, $4.50 or “More” for a cup of coffee, having to stand at a counter, drinking it in short time and leaving. Ending up $5.00 or more less in my pockets. Well you may think, “What’s $5.00?” Right? What’s Five Dollars? Imagine if you have 5 $5.00 coffees a week for one year. Do you know how much money that adds up to? Relax, I’ll do the Math for you. That’s $1,300 my friends. No small sum? Multiply that by 5 years and you’re talking $6,500, or by Ten Years and we’re talking $13,000. That’s a lot of Friggin Cash my friends. Hey I’m not saying you should not go out and have coffee. I do all the time. Heck, on my days off, I sometimes end up in cafes three times in one day.  I spend about $1,508 a year on coffee, $7,500 in five years or about $15,000 in ten. That’s a lot. But I get a lot. Heck, I used to spend about $2,200 a year on coffee,  $10, 000 or more in 5, or about $20,000 in ten years. But I have cut back. I’ve seen the light. I hardly ever spend $5.00 on a coffee any more. All I need is the $2.00 variety. A good honest “Cup of Joe,” a “Regular.” And I need to get my money’s worth. If I just wanted a good cup can easily make a great one in my house for just “15 Cents a Cup,” but I go and have one at a Café for 15 times that amount. Why? The extra $2.35 I pay for the coffee plus tip, is to be able to “Sit” down and relax in a nice pleasant atmosphere. I’m not gonna pay 27 times ($3.75 Average price coffee at Upscale Coffee Bar) to stand at a counter and not being able to sit down and relax. At home I can  make a tasty cup of Coffee from the Highest Quality Coffee money can buy with the coffee I buy at  “Porto Rico Coffee” on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, just a half block from my house. No, I pay all that extra money to sit in the pleasant environment of a nice coffee. Also to see other people, maybe a friend or the possibility of meeting someone new and interesting. I read, I write, I hang with friends, I relax. I can not do that at a overpriced “Coffee Bar” that doesn’t have any place to sit.

And speaking of Porto Rico Coffee, it mystifies me that people are so foolish as to pay $11.95 or more for a mass-produced commercial pound of Coffee from Starbucks instead of going to the “Best Coolest Place in Town” to be some of the World’s Finest Coffee at Porto Rico Coffee, people who have been doing this for more than 100 years, not 20. It just doesn’t make sense. By the way, the coffee I buy at Porto Rico is just $5.99 and $6.99 a pound, half the price of a pound of Starbucks Coffee.

Anyway. It’s all up to you. I’ll  stick with my Regular “Cup of Joe” with a Espresso and Cappuccino thrown in here and there, and as a special treat a Cortado from Abraco every now and then. And I’ll get to sit down and relax with my coffee each day, putting an extra $1,000 a year in my pocket, or Airfare and a few nice meals when I go on vacation. How bout you, “Hit and Run”and pay more, or Sit Down and Relax, Pay Less, Save, and put a Thousand Bucks a Year in your pockets, or $10,000 in ten ?

BIG FOOT

A question most asked by restaurant professionals in New York who love Tony Bourdain and his minor-masterpiece Kitchen Confidential on the underbelly of the New York Restaurant World and the restaurant scene in general. Yes, you read Anthony Bourdain’s New York Times Best Seller and what launched Tony into fame as the Star of such shows as : A COOKS TOUR,  NO RESERVATIONS, The LAYOVER, and PARTS UNKNOWN on CNN.

In KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL Tony talks with adulation of his former boss whom Tony called  BigFoot . Tony expounds on Big Foot’s unconventional managerial skills in the restaurant business in New York and the many things he learned from him. Bourdain never mentions the guys name, so it has been the source of major intrigue to all who have read Anthony Bourdain ‘s entertaining book.
So you ask, who the Hell is He? Who is BIG FOOT ?
Answer : ANDY MENSCHEL is Tony Bourdain’s BIG FOOT

My SLAME PIZZA at Da MARINA , NAPOLI

So I was ready for Lunch one day and I knew I wanted a nice plate

of SPAGHETTI VONGOLE along with some sort of antipasto item to start.

I was walking around and came across Da Marino. I popped my head in and it

looked pretty good, so as the hostess greeted me I signaled here a table for 1 and she told me

to sit wherever I wanted to.  I found a table, settle in and looked over the menu. I ordered a

small carafe of Falaghina local white wine and looked over the menu a little more. As I said I

knew I wanted Spaghetti Vongole and I decided on an Insalta Frutta di Mare as my first course.

It came and it was Awesome and as Perfect as Perfect can be. I ate it, sipped my wine and was

more or less “In 7th Heaven” .. Then came my Spaghetti Vongole and it was the same, perfect

as perfect can be.

After finishing my pasta I had to make a quick trip to the WC. On the way I passed the

Pizzaiolo at the PIZZA OVEN. I took a look and the Pizza looked great.

When I came out of the WC I stopped by to chat to the Pizzaiolo who was a guy from

Japan who came to NAPOLI to Learn how to make Pizza. “Where Else?” Well New York

wouldn’t be bad, but to the Japanese when he went back to JAPAN, making Pizza in Napoli

was going to look better on the resume than New York, though we are known as the 2nd

Best Pizza spot on Earth, “try telling that to the Japanese.” TO make a long story short,

though I wasn’t planning on having Pizza, the PIZZA coming out of that oven looked so

DAM GOOD that I just couldn’t resist. I didn’t feel stuffed or anything, so I figured

“What The Hell,” why not try a Pizza here. Id’ just eat as much as I could and stop

when I felt full. Well the PIZZA came and as you can see above, it was Friggin Awesome.

And I surprised myself when I ate the whole thing. “It was that Dam Good.” !!!
